Four Diamonds (an organization founded to assist children and their families in their fight against childhood cancer) has selected Elizabeth Lynch and Samantha Kelly, seniors at Springfield High School, as members of the 2019-2020 Mini-THON Student Leadership Council. The Mini-THON Student Leadership Council provides feedback and shares ideas with the Four Diamonds staff throughout the school year to help improve the Mini-THON program. This role is given to students that excel in their local Mini-THON through leadership, fundraising and their commitment to community service. Elizabeth and Samantha will serve as advocates and leaders for Four Diamonds, Mini-THON and more than 90,000 students who are on a mission to conquer childhood cancer. During the 2018-2019 school year, 268 schools participated in a Four Diamonds Mini-THON event to help conquer childhood cancer.
Mini-THONs are modeled after the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, or THON™, the world's largest student-run philanthropy. Since 1993, Mini-THON has raised more than $36 million. The funds are used to drive the discovery of new and improved treatments for childhood cancer by supporting the work of more than 90 researchers at Penn State Children's Hospital and Penn State College of Medicine. Four Diamonds also supports families by covering all medical expenses not paid for by insurance for every eligible child.
Trisha Comstock, Associate Director of Mini-THON, says, "Elizabeth and Samantha exemplify the leadership and character of the Mini-THON® program and have proven to be role models for their peers. Their outstanding management, organizational skills, and commitment to community service make them ideal representatives for Four Diamonds and our mission to conquer childhood cancer."
The Steve Stefani/SHS Dance Marathon held its 17th Mini-THON in March, 2019. Utilizing a dedicated and spirited organizational structure of a leadership team, captain positions, committee members, and dancers, this student-led dance marathon is one of the most recognizable organizations at Springfield High School.
