Ecology Center Welcome back to school! Lucky for us, Steve Marker and his crew worked in the ecology center prior to the start of school. It always amazes me how the weeds grow so well and the flowers struggle! Shelly is wandering around the ecology center. He will stay outside until the temperature drops below 50 degrees. Thanks to Bit for helping with feeding the turtles this summer. Shelly almost reacts like a trained dog! When he sees an adult he plows to them to see if there is a handout! Shelly is a herbivore, but does enjoy hard boiled eggs, and sometimes raids the box turtles’ canned dog food! Nibbles also came back from summer vacation. Nibbles is in a pen on the porch. She can stay there since she has a fur coat, but when the weather goes below freezing, she’ll have to come in at night. Nibbles had a bit of a problem handling the heat on the porch and moved to the Bridges room to cool off. Now that the weather has hopefully changed to fall weather, she will be fine on the porch. All the mallards left by the end of August. It is important that they leave so they will migrate by late fall. Shelly, Nibbles, and the baby box turtles had to come in for the weekend while some work was being done in the ecology center. Finding Shelly proved to be a challenge. Luckily resident Wildlife Warriors, Mrs. Loro and Mrs. Grace, came to the rescue on the Shelly hunt. Shelly was not too happy about coming indoors for the weekend. Thanks to our maintenance chief, Bernie Heffernan for finding out that our scaly and furry friends needed to come inside! We’ll see what autumn happenings occur in the ecology center next month!
