Welcome to Dr. Brett's Class Page!

I teach 12th grade English language arts (ELA) here at Springfield High School. I attended the University of Notre Dame where I studied English and Anthropology.  I also had the opportunity to study at University College Dublin in Ireland.  After graduating from college, I taught English classes at Montgomery County Community College.  I then attended Villanova University to earn my Teaching Certificate and Master's degree in Education.  I worked at the University Writing Center at Notre Dame and at Villanova which cemented my desire to work with student writing.  I have been a 12th grade ELA teacher at SHS for the past eighteen years.  I teach AP Literature and Composition and 12th grade Honors English Language Arts.  I love having the opportunity to teach seniors as we work toward becoming more effective and empathetic communicators.  In 2018 I received a PhD in Education with a Concentration in Literacies and Learners from Temple University.  My goal is to guide students in their responses to literature in ways that balance awareness of authors' aesthetic choices as well as empathetic engagement with the elements of the narrative world.  Along with all of the members of the ELA Department, I work to prepare students to excel at university level reading, writing, and thinking.

Assessment Procedures:

Assessment is an ongoing part of all of my courses and students will receive constant feedback on their reading and writing processes.  Every student learning activity, writing piece, revision, reading work, project, etc has a point value and students can steadily work to improve their grade by submitting their best work on each assignment.

Keys to Success:

Attendance.  Preparation.  Full Participation in the learning experiences of the course.  Authentic engagement with each learning task.  Timely submission of course work.  Positive Attitude. Resilience.  Willingness to contribute during discussion.  Genuine spirit of curiosity.  Empathy.
